I am 14 and considering joining the army...I am in JROTC and am definatly going to college, I'm just not sure whether to do ROTC or Chemistry. Which would you choose, the life of an Officer, or a doctor of nuclear medicine? If I do decide to become an Army officer, what are the chances of being stationed where I requested?
Thanks for your time,
C/PFC Bradley
If I went through R.O.T.C., how many years would I need to give to the Army to become a captain?
you usually make captain after 3 years from being commisioned.
you start as a 2nd lt. and after 1 year or so, make 1st lt. then after 3 years captain. now, 8-10 years you make major.
Reply:First of all, Chemistry is a major from which you obtain a degree, while ROTC is a program which you are part of while working toward a degree in school. ROTC does not give you a degree by itself, it is simply the program which you can go through in order to obtain a commission. You must have a college degree however to be comissioned through ROTC. So, if you were in ROTC, you would still have to choose a major, like chemistry for instance.
Reply:You can do both ROTC and chemistry. You don't have to choose. You can be both a doctor of nuclear medicine and an officer.
A normal officer takes between 3 1/2 to 4 years to get to Captain (USA, USMC, USAF) or Lieutenant (USN). A Doctor starts their term in the military at this rank because of the advanced education necessary to become a doctor in the first place.
